I’m a person with a lot of interests and I have a hard time sitting still. I’m a federal public affairs specialist, a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer and a former journalist.
Before COVID-19 shattered my Peace Corps dreams (but somehow landed me a sweet new job at USDA Forest Service), I worked as a digital news editor at the Chicago Tribune. There, I did lots of cool internet-y things, like social media management, audio production, homepage curation and some occasional feature writing.
I managed to transition all of my breaking news skills over to wildfire communications. Now, I work on the opposite side of the journalist-source exchange to write press releases, take photos, update government web pages and spend a lot of my time out in the field at project sites and on firelines.
I’m just a little too sarcastic and can usually be found with a coffee in one hand and my iPhone in the other. In my free time, I enjoy reading, blogging, learning new languages, practicing and teaching yoga, hiking, traveling, playing my ukulele, eating pizza and watching hockey.
Here’s an example of some of the news releases I’ve written through Forest Service and various Incident Management Teams.
After Mount Pleasant, Mich. resident Tim Roslund was diagnosed with terminal cancer, he and his family allowed me to document the days leading up to death. A three-part series presented in chronological order.
The elected treasurer of Union Township, Mich. refused to defend the township’s budget when it came under attack by the state’s Republican representative candidate, who was running against a member of the township’s board. A seven-part series presented in chronological order.

*My service was intended to be 27 months. However, I was evacuated and my service was cut short due to the global evacuation of all Peace Corps Volunteers in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. I was granted RPCV status.
I populated the Chicago Tribune homepage and produced content items for online using CMS. I recorded, produced and uploaded daily Amazon Alexa flash briefings. I wrote, recorded and produced audio segments and podcast series episodes to accompany online story packages. I used a variety of online tools to create digital-specific presentation assets.
